THERMAL, CALIFORNIA (January 30, 2012)---Kate Considine and Hannah Goodson-Cutt's Caretano scored an impressive triumph in Sunday's $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix when they beat out 39 starters to highlight the week for hunters during the opening weekend of the HITS Desert Circuit in Thermal, California.
Course Designer John Manning of Shelburne, Massachusetts set a unique track where exhibitors had to ride in two different rings. “In one ring the course was set like a traditional show hunter course,” said Manning. “Then they had to jump into another ring where I set some more natural obstacles with long approaches.”
Caretano and Goodson-Cutt were champions at Devon and all four indoor shows in 2011. After an impressive showing on Sunday, it looks like Caretano is in for another banner year with Considine of Sherman Oaks, California in the tack as Goodson-Cutt is now studying at Georgetown University.
“I am so thankful to have such a great horse owner,” said Considine. “Not only did I have the pleasure to train Hannah throughout her entire junior career, I now have this wonderful horse to ride. This is a once-in-a-lifetime horse. I am truly blessed.”
Considine and Caretano scored an 83.5 in the first round which put them in fifth place heading into the second test. The top 15 were brought back for round two and Considine and Caretano came home with an 87 which gave them a total of 170.5 to secure the blue.
Northern California's Hope Glynn of Penngrove, California scored a top-20 finish in the inaugural Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and once again has her sights set on qualifying for this year’s final.
On Sunday, Glynn picked up right where she left off when she finished the Devoucoux Hunter Prix with two horses in the top three when she placed second aboard Dennis Sisco's Perfect Pleasure and third aboard Sabrina Hellman's Bel Canto.
Rounding out the top five in the class were Emanuel Schroeder of Mill Valley, California aboard Kaile Rudy’s Serendipity in fourth, and Nicole Kane of Newport Beach, California aboard Victoria Farms Vaunted in fifth.
Sunday’s class was the first of six Devoucoux Hunter Prix qualifiers for the 2012 Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final that will be held at this year’s HITS Desert Circuit. West Coast exhibitors will have plenty of opportunities to secure the five qualifiers needed to become eligible for the big ticket finale, including the $25,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix Sunday, March 11.
“I was honored to compete in a class with such great riders. My plan right now is to bring the horse to Saugerties and show in the big class in September. We actually are going to book our hotel this week,” said Considine.
