SAUGERTIES, NY (May
28, 2006)--William Lowry and his eight-year-old
horse Polygraaf, galloped away with the blue
ribbon in Sunday's $75,000 EMO Grand Prix at HITS
Saugerties completing the first week of competition
on the Spring Circuit in Saugerties, NY.
Twenty-two
horses took to the field over the course set by
Danny Foster of Ontario , Canada. Three other
horse and rider combinations advanced to the jump-off.
“When I set the course I was trying to keep in
perspective that it was the first week,” said
Foster. “But in order to respect EMO, this great
venue, and the riders I had to keep a very high
standard.”
Lowry’s
jump-off time of 45.204 was the fastest, as each
rider had clear rounds in the jump-off. But Lowry
didn’t know because he wasn’t watching any of
the other rounds. He was too busy calming his
horse down.
“I was worried about Anne (Kursinski) beating
me,” said Lowry. “But I was on my horse trying
to keep it organized. Sometimes he can be a little
crazy.”
Lowry
was the third to tackle Foster’s route in the
jump-off, surpassing the time of Henrik Gundersen
and Darvin
Garbo. Kirk Webby went clear to start the
jump-off aboard Sitah. After his perfect round he was showered with congratulations
as he passed underneath the spectator bridge that
spans the in-gate to the grand prix amphitheater.
“It’s
great to get support here,” said Webby, who is
also a regular at HITS Ocala. “Riding under the
bridge
when
it is full is a rush.”
Kursinski,
an Olympic veteran, had the final round in the
jump-off and finished second with a time of 46.421
on her mount Lorenzo.
She was one of four Olympic riders to have a turn
in Sunday’s $75,000 EMO Grand Prix, but the only
to make it into the second round. Gundersen and
Webby were third and fourth, respectively.
“Anne
just seems to always beat me out,” said Lowry.
“Luckily, today, we hung on.”
“I
think you are going to see a lot of good things
from this horse in the future,” said Lowry. “We
worked a lot harder yesterday and this morning
and he reacted well to it. I can do big things
with him including some World Cup classes.”
Lowry
also grabbed sixth place aboard Rio Corde
who had the second-best time of the mounts with
four faults.
He will be in Saugerties for two more weeks
enjoying the remainder of the HITS Saugerties’
Spring Circuit. With Lowry’s guidance, he earned
$26,250 in prize money for Winsor Farm Sales,
Inc.
