SAUGERTIES,
NY (July 30, 2006)—Addison
Phillips and Brianne Goutal showed up a week
too early for Kids Day at HITS, but the teens,
who live in the same New York City building, didn't
walk away empty handed. Together they won $39,000
in total prize money after finishing first and
second respectively in the $75,000 In the Woods
Grand Prix, presented by RV Sales of Broward.
The Grand Prix concluded Week V at HITS Saugerties'
Summer Circuit.
Aboard Trezebees,
Phillips was the fastest of three riders to
go clean on course designer Leopoldo Palacios'
jump-off route. Her jump-off time of 35.111 beat
Goutal and Onira's time of 35.515 by fractions
of a second. The 17-year-old had quite a week
at HITS Saugerties. On Tuesday, Phillips captured
the 2006 USHJA Hunterdon Cup Equitation Classic,
presented by World Equestrian Brands, and in Thursday's
$25,000 HITS Grand Prix she finished in the top
10.
"I really don't
know what to say," said Phillips, who was
swarmed by her friends after beating some of the
world's top riders. "This is one of the most
amazing weeks of my life. Just competing against
riders like McLain Ward and Margie Engle is a
thrill." Phillips is one the top junior riders
in the country. She was second only to Goutal
in the 2005 ASPCA Maclay National Championships.Phillips
turned the tables today at HITS Saugerties, edging
out her long-time friend and and sometimes rival
Goutal.
"We have been
friends and neighbors for as long as I can remember,"
said Goutal. "She is a very fast rider and
gets along great with all of her horses. It's
always great to compete against her."
Goutal is 18 and
went first in the jump-off and set the Great American
Time to Beat at a blistering 35.515. "Going
first I knew I was going to have to set the pace,"
said Goutal." I added a stride so I knew
that Addison would have a chance to beat me if
she went clear because she is a very fast rider."
Next in the jump-off
was Engle and her 16-year-old Olympic Mount, Hidden
Creek's Perin. Engle dropped a single rail,
the Antares vertical jump located in front of
the HITS VIP Pavilion, as she finished with four
faults. Engle grabbed fourth place and $6,000
in prize money for Hidden Creek Farm. Engle, who
has won over $3 million in prize money in her
career took home the top prize in last years $75,000
In the Woods Grand Prix.
The winners of last
weeks $75,000 Grand Prix, Laura Chapot and
Little Big Man were next in the jump-off.
A repeat performance was not in the cards for
Chapot, as three rails came down resulting in
a final fifth place finish.
Henrik Gundersen,
winner of Thursday's $25,000 HITS Grand Prix,
was aiming for the win aboard Complete
with his clear round jump-off, but in the final
tally, his time of 36.192 scored the third place
finish.
Finally,
it was Phillips' turn and she made the most of
her 'last to ride' position, capturing her first
Grand Prix win. Phillips and Goutal were coming
off a successful Junior Competition earlier in
the week, and both riders were feeling pretty
confident. And confidence was the name of the
game on Sunday, as the two teens swept past 36
other riders, including four former Olympians
to capture the one-two finish!
Show
Jumping at HITS Saugerties continues Wednesday
through Sunday with competitions in up to 10 show
rings. Week VI culminates with the $75,000 Footings
Unlimited Grand Prix on August 6. On Saturday,
August 5 HITS Saugerties hosts Kids Day from 10
AM - 2PM and on Sunday, August 6, prior to the
$75,000 Footings Unlimited Grand Prix HITS hosts
World of the Horse.
