SAUGERTIES,
NY (July
23, 2006)—Laura Chapot got a giant lift from Little
Big Man, as the pair posted the only double-clear
round in the $75,000 RV Sales of Broward Grand
Prix, presented by In The Woods Log Homes, capping
off Week IV of show jumping at HITS Saugerties
on Sunday.
Chapot
was second to tackle German course designer Olaf
Petersen, Jr.’s jump-off course. Soon, the horse/rider
combination established themselves as the pair
to beat, setting the Great American Time to Beat
at 42.485. Chapot was 25th to go in the first-round
on the 12-year-old Dutch Gelding and posted just
the second clean ride. Olympian McLain Ward had
the first, 10 trips before Chapot. "It looked
for a while like there wouldn't be a jump-off,"
said Chapot. "Watching everyone take rails
down had me nervous. But my horse was amazing
today and we got through it just fine."
Chapot and Little
Big Man have a long history together. She
bought him as a four-year-old and over time has
turned him into a successful Grand Prix mount.
When asked if she saw his potential early on,
Chapot answered, "You never know how a horse is
going to turn out and if it will go on to become
a Grand Prix horse, but from the first time I
saw him I knew he was a special horse."
Ward
got the jump-off started aboard Halbi D’Ariane.
Ward suffered heartbreak at the final jump, when
he took down jump 16 for a four-fault score. The
competitions youngest rider Brianne Goutal and
Onira were third to go in a jump-off of
six horses. She had Chapot’s time, but one rail
down landed the 18-year-old in third place. Goutal
won the 2005 ASPCA Maclay National Championships.
Margie
Engle and Hidden Creek’s Quervo Gold took
on Petersen’s route next. Engle, who has won over
$3 Million in prize money in her career, couldn’t
win Sunday’s top prize. She finished with four-faults
and her time of 47.872 would be the slowest of
five horses with four-faults landing her in sixth
place. She was also seventh on Hidden Creek's
Perin.
Thursday’s
$25,000 HITS Grand Prix winner, Jeffery Welles
and Armani tried a repeat performance,
but jump 4C prevented the encore. His time of 41.354
put him in second place, making his prize money
for the week $26,250. Ken Berkley and Carlos-Boy
couldn’t manage any late heroics on the rounds
last trip. The horse/rider combination also had
four faults and finished in fifth place. Eliza
Ferguson Shuford had a pair of top 12 finishes,
as. Larentino was ninth and Cantate
26 was 12th.
"The course
was challenging. Therefore it afforded some riders
the opportunity to prepare for Achen," said
Petersen. "Once Ward went clear I knew some
other riders had a chance and it would be a competitive
jump-off."
Chapot
earned some valuable points with the win as every
grand prix at all HITS horse shows, including
HITS Saugerties and HITS Culpeper is a qualifier
for the United States Grand Prix League Finals. The
finals for the league will be held in Culpeper
on October 1, where $100,000 in prize money will
be on the line. The event is limited to the top
30 United States Grand Prix League horse/rider
combinations. Chapot was also 11th aboard Samantha,
earning more points towards the Finals.
Show Jumping at HITS
Saugerties continues Wednesday through Sunday
with competitions in up to 10 show rings. Week
V culminates with the $75,000 In The Woods Grand
Prix, presented by RV Sales of Broward, on July
30. For more information please, call 845.246.8833
