SAUGERTIES, NY (June
14, 2006) -- HITS Saugerties’ Spring Circuit came
to a close on Sunday, June 11, but not before
two major championships were decided. Laura Parker,
of Southport, CT, was crowned the winner in the
$22,500 Child/Adult Jumper Championship aboard
Premier and Carolyn Kelly, of New York,
NY, took home the $40,000 JR/A-O Jumper Championship
with her mount Omona.
Both competitions
were based on the format used for the United States
Equestrian Federation National Show Jumping Championships
and the International World Cup Finals. HITS has
taken this competition format to the world of
Child/Adult Jumper riders and JR/A-O Jumper riders.
This fast growing segment of the show jumping
world has demonstrated their enthusiasm and competitive
nature at horse shows all over the country. These
riders and their horses are rapidly becoming the
largest division of jumper riders on the horse
show circuit today.
There are three phases
to each of the Championship competitions. The
first is a Speed Class, where the jumps are not
as large as in subsequent phases. Faults are assigned
to riders based on their standings at the completion
of each phase. Each rider is invited back for
phase two, which is a class with bigger jumps
and with time being a factor only if a rider exceeds
the time allotted to complete the course. The
top 25 riders after phase one and two return for
the Final Match. The Final Match has the greatest
number of jumps in the course and the biggest.
It consists of two rounds over a Grand Prix style
course. The scores from all three phases determine
the Championship winners. The riders with the
least number of faults and the best times place
highest.
In the $2,500 Child/Adult
Opening Match, Patricia Diamon Hennessy outperformed
98 starters to take the early lead aboard Little
Tom. But her lead was short-lived as Parker
and Premier won the $5,000 Child/Adult
Intermediate Match and the $15,000 Final Match
to take home the top prize of $4,500 on Sunday.
HITS awarded $22,500 in total prize money over
the three days of competition in the Child/Adult
Jumper Championship competition.
Fifty-six horses
competed in the $5,000 JR/A-O Jumper Championship
Opening Match. Kelly and Omona grabbed
the winner’s share of the purse, taking home $1,500.
A seventh place finish in the $10,000 JR/A-O Jumper
Championship Intermediate Match didn’t spoil the
three-day event for her, as she came out on top
with a win in the $25,000 JR/A-O Jumper Championship
Final Match. She won $7,500 in prize money in
the Final Match and $9,500 in total winnings.
David Tromp and Shahrazad won the $10,000
JR/A-O Intermediate Match. In all, $40,000 in
prize money was awarded in the three-days of the
JR/A-O Championship competition.
Show jumping at HITS
Saugerties continues on July 19 when HITS Saugerties’
Summer Circuit begins with three consecutive weeks
of world-class equestrian competition with up
to 10 rings of show jumping. For more information,
