SAUGERTIES, NY (June
11, 2006) - Eliza Ferguson Shuford certainly saved
her best for last, as Shuford and Larentino
emerged victorious in Sunday's $75,000 HITS
Grand Prix, concluding HITS Saugerties' Spring
Circuit.
The horse and rider
combination were the last to tackle Olaf Petersen's
jump-off course and stopped the clock at 36.921.
Jimmy Torano and Marlo held the Great American
Time to beat at 38.736, before Shuford shattered
his time.
"I had a good feeling
heading into the final jump that I had the time,"
said Shuford. "I heard the crowd yelling for me
to go faster, so I pushed it and came away with
the win." Petersen funneled the field of 43 riders
in the opening round down to a jump-off of 12.
Five riders went
double-clear, including Chris Kappler and VDL
Oranta. They went first in the jump-off. The
duo's time of 39.574 looked good for a while,
especially for Kappler who watched the remainder
of the jump-off under the spectator bridge.
Federico Sztyrle
and Fatalis Fatum went next and also were
clear. But their time of 40.220 was only good
enough for fourth place. After Frankie Chesler-Ortiz
and Picolien Zeldenrust's four-fault effort,
Torano had his turn and ultimately took over the
lead. As Torano
passed under the spectator bridge, Kappler was
the first to congratulate him on a great trip.
"He really attacked some of the fences," said
Kappler. "I thought my time was fast, but the
way Jimmy went after some of the jumps was special.
It was a difficult jump-off course and for him
to finish with a time like that was great."
Torano and Kappler
were second and third, respectively. Kappler and
VDL Oranta were also second in Thursday's
$25,000 HITS Grand Prix. Crowd favorite Nona Garson
and Languster had the final double-clear
round and finished fifth. However, during the
awards ceremony she was flooded with cheers from
her support group that formed around the In-gate
of the Grand Prix Stadium.
Keean White and
Vienna Rouge and Manuel Torres and Chambacunero
each advanced to the jump-off. Both horse
and rider combinations had four-fault scores.
The win in Sunday's
$75,000 HITS Grand Prix culminates a brilliant
three-week run for Shuford at HITS Saugerties'
Spring Circuit. She placed five times in six Grand
Prix classes on the circuit. Her winnings of $22,500
for the Larentino Group in Sunday's $75,000 HITS
Grand Prix was just the exclamation point for
Shuford. "It certainly was a great run," she said.
"I look forward to more success here in the summer."
HITS Saugerties'
Summer Circuit begins on July 19, with show jumping
Wednesday through Sunday from 8 AM to approximately
5 PM. On Saturday, July 22 HITS Saugerties hosts
