She Did it Again! Callan Solem Wins Another $25,000 HITS Grand Prix on Mianta

SAUGERTIES, NY (June 8, 2006) – Thursday must be Callan Solem’s lucky day.

Solem, 27, and Mianta captured the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix today, marking her second win in as many tries in Thursday Grand Prix Classes at HITS Saugerties this spring.

In Week I, Solem and Allison seized the blue ribbon in the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, and this winter she won two Thursday Grand Prix Classes at HITS Ocala. She didn’t compete during Week II of HITS Saugerties.

“She was going so fast she almost jumped out of her shoes,” said Solem. “We had a couple of lucky rubs in the first round, but the jump-off was really smooth. She was going so fast, I was just hanging on for the ride.”

Quiet Winter Farm and Redfield Farm own Mianta, a 12-year-old Dutch Warm Blood. “Without them I couldn’t own a horse like this,” said Solem. “I am thankful to work with great owners.”

A field of 34 horse and rider combinations competed over Olaf Petersen's first round course. Twelve horses advanced to the jump-off, and three were double-clear. Solem stopped the clock at 38.149 to grab the top prize of $7,500.

Patty Stovel and Shandor 41 were first in the jump-off and went clear in a time of 40.580. Two trips later, Chris Kappler and VDL Oranta took over the Great American Insurance time to beat, stopping the clock at 38.696. Kappler’s second place finish won him $5,500 and Stovel won $3,250 for her third place effort.

Frankie Chesler-Ortiz took three horses into the jump-off. Her best ride was a fifth place finish aboard Picolien Zeldenrust. Ranville was eight and VDL Nuit De Pomme was ninth. With her three mounts, she earned $3,000 for Sher-Al Farms. Manuel Torres and Chambacunero were fourth, rounding out the top five.

Solem will see if she can do it again Sunday, in the $75,000 HITS Grand Prix. “It would be nice to win that one,” she said. “My owners deserve to win the big one.” Sunday’s $75,000 HITS Grand Prix concludes HITS Saugerties’ Spring Circuit. The HITS Summer Circuit commences on July 19..

This weekend HITS Saugerties features an Equine Art Exhibit from 10 AM – 5 PM, on Saturday and Sunday. Artists participating in the exhibit will include: Nina Akamu, John Beilman, Rauld Bradstock, Brenda Bates Clark, Robert Gauntt, Jean Haines, Juliet Harrison, Pat Kelly, Gail Maslyk, Rodney Skidmore, and Catherine Windley.
