TUCSON,
AZ (February 20, 2006) -- Brandie Holloway galloped
away with the blue ribbon in Sunday's $25,000 HITS Grand Prix aboard Argentina, a
nine-year-old Argentinian Warmblood owned by Hays Investment Corp.
The Grand Prix wrapped up the third week of showing at HITS Arizona,
and marked the second win for Brandie
Holloway.
Holloway is having a terrific circuit with the two horses she is showing
at the Grand Prix level. In week 1 she won
the $25,000
HITS
Grand
Prix
with
S&L So Be It, a mare she bought from Mike
McCormick of
Flower
Mound,
Texas.
In
week 2 she placed second with S&L So Be It. And this week she
led the victory gallop with Argentina, a young
horse imported from Ecuador last September.
Patrick Rodes set the test for the field
of 28 starters, and six horses made it through to compete in the
jump-off. Rodes was happy with the outcome. He described the field
as a mixture of some good professionals and some junior-amateurs.
"I had to build accordingly, making sure it was tough enough, but
at the same time not getting anybody in trouble."
Rhodes last line included a wide oxer to a double-combination finish.
The combination proved to be the biggest test of the course with
an unlucky thirteen pulling rails.
Sharn Wordley and Mr. Flanagan, winners of last week's Grand Prix,
opened the jump-off round. The pair left all the rails up to
finish in a time to beat of 42.48 seconds.
Wordley held on to the lead until
Romelia Calderon, who was fifth
in the order, topped his time when she came home clean with Sea
Bridge in 41.85 seconds.
Brandie Holloway was last to
go and went all out to catch Calderon's time. "My mare
(S&L
So Be
It)
wasn't on form and ended up with eight faults. She is really my more
reliable mount, but it ended up that it was all riding on Argentina this time. We just went for it. He's got a big step and is very scopey,
and he tried his heart out for me."
Holloway and Argentina stopped
the timers in 40.78 seconds, shaving over a second off Romelia Calderon's
time for the win.
Brandie Holloway
describes her two mounts as being very different rides. "S&L
So Be It is kind
of a hot, quick ride. Argentina needs
lots of leg and is more of a European ride. It took me a couple of
times to try to understand this ride, but he’s got so much jump
and is such a wonderful brave and honest horse, I feel very lucky to
be able to ride him."
The
2006 HITS Arizona Winter Circuit will run for another three weeks at
the Pima County Fairgrounds in Tucson, Arizona.
Show jumping will resume at HITS
Arizona on Wednesday, February 22, and the next Grand Prix show
jumping event will be the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix on Sunday, February 26.
